Originally a rubber plantation, Mahausakande rainforest grew out of the conservation efforts of Mrs Nalini Ellawala of the Ellawala Foundation. Many years later, visiting the forest, armed with a camera, was Mr. Roman Prokhorov, who showed his photographs of insects of Mahausakande to Mrs Ellawala. Motivated by a desire to share these stunning photographs with the public, and a concurrent wish to showcase what conservation has achieved in Mahausakande, Mrs Ellawala sought the assistance of the authors who are entomologists, to complement these photographs with understandable text.

To the laymen seeking to learn about insects in general and insects that live in a regenerating forest as the outcome of conservation efforts carried out over the last 15 years, the book is an eye opener. Readers will learn of the different types of bees in Sri Lanka, the long-egged walking-stick insect, the firefly with its own internal lighting system, the cicada that is rarely seen but mostly definitely heard, as well as other insects that look as if they have stepped out of a Star Wars movie.

While the photographs will delight and amaze, the message of the ecological and economic value of insects is conveyed in the text.

It is hoped that this book will please both amateur and professional entomologists, conservation biologists, and nature lovers as well as, perhaps, to convince those who fear or hate insects, look again, read about them, and think differently about them

Shipping / Delivery :

We at Barefoot, will professionally and to the best of our ability and experience,  package all your orders in durable material to prevent wear-and-tear in transit. Our packing is carried out in house and logistics is handled by a professional forwarder or courier that operates throughout the week. 

Shipping in Sri Lanka:

  • We provide delivery Islandwide on prepaid orders. Standard delivery charges, which will be made known to you when accepting your order,  will apply on all cash/credit delivery orders. 
  • Colombo City Limits: Upto1st Kilogram Rs:450/- each additional Kilogram or part thereof will be an additional Rs:150/- 
  • Outside of Colombo: Delivery fee will be calculated based on weight of the order. 
  • We are ready to dispatch most orders the very next day or within 2-3 working days. Any custom orders may take longer, a delivery date for the same will be provided via email. Delivery to areas with remote connectivity may also take a longer period.
  • All orders will be delivered to the address mentioned at the time of placing the order. To ensure timely delivery and avoid misplacement, we request you to provide your complete address and check thoroughly before submitting.
  • In case the delivery is not accepted in the first attempt, the cost of re-shipping the products will have to be borne by the customer.
