Of all the places I had imagined I would one day come upon my mother, a late-night television talk show had never made the list.
When the questions began to control everything and seep into my dreams, I knew I had to seek help.
'The problem with losing a mother figure in this way is that the longing for her in your youth is subsumed by resentment and hatred in later years. This could often lead to violet thoughts.'
I stopped going to my therapist when she suggested hypnosis to delve into the roots of my trauma. I decided I didn't need to fall asleep on her couch, with her pity dripping all over me.
