This book is the product of a careful examination of Jayantha Premachandra's evolution as an artist over approximately four decades. He was a keen student and indeed, it can be argued, that like any serious exponent of any art form, study and experimentation were always. integral to his practice. All this makes it challenging for anyone to provide a definitive answer to the question, 'Who was Jayantha Premachandra?' This, we feel is fortuitous, simply because it means that the canvas upon which he deployed line, space and colour, is vast enough to inspire many to study him further. It would inspire others to engage in the worlds they inhabit with the same boldness and expressive freedom without compromising the humility that is a constant reminder of the fact that creative quests, happily, are necessarily endless.
There is, however, a question that remains outside of those related to artistic genres and Jayantha Premachandra's explorations therein. His talent, energy and accomplishments are many and clearly of an order that places him among the best exponents of his time. He received many accolades for his work. Newspaper clippings as well as photographs related to exhibitions he's held show that he was known not only by those who inhabited the same creative universe but cultural icons and prominent political figures of the time.
